This is surprising but the inventor of the stroller was the personality famous for garden architecture. His name was William Kent and he invented the first baby stroller in 1733. Duke of Devonshire applied to him to devise some kind of transportation to carry children. So the first stroller was a shell-shaped basket on wheels strong enough to keep the child. The inventor decorated it in a beautiful way. It was meant to be pulled forward by a pony or a goat. The popularity of such strollers was confirmed after Queen Victoria acquired 3 strollers, which were made of wood or wicker at that time. The joints were made of brass, which was very expensive. It even became the symbol of high status to have a baby stroller. But they were not very functional then.
They there many attempts to make the strollers more modern and convenient for children and parents.
The first reversible stroller appeared in 1889. William Richardson, the author of the invention, even patented this idea. The stroller could be forward-faced and rear-faced, the way the parents wish it. This inventor contributed to maneuverability much.
Ornate carriages were a big success, but they were not available to simple people and the situation changed only after the 20-s of the last century. The improvements added to the strollers made them safer for kids. The wheels became to move independently, the frames became stronger and the seat belts appeared that made the seats safer. Besides, the strollers were equipped with brakes.
Some changes to the structure of the strollers were made by aeronautical engineer Owen Maclaren in 1965, who was not pleased with the quality of heavy pram and designed the frame made of aluminum.
Nowadays there are strollers of different types which are light, functional and beautiful and this is what we are going to discuss in this blog.
